CompactPCI -> PCI expansion unit 3 U 32-bit
The expansion unit is inserted in a free device slot of a CPCI backplane. It is best used with a backplane that has the host on the right side. The unit is then inserted in the first slot on the left. No slots are lost in this manner, and even long PCI cards can be inserted.
This gives system developers access to the large number of PCI boards available worldwide in a rugged, high-quality CompactPCI.
Fast and simple expansion unit handling during insertion and removal is assured by proven 19” technology. The complete Windows support provided by this product facilitates fast system integration. Additional drivers are not needed. The PCI devices are detected by a standard PCI BIOS with BIOS extension.
The expansion unit has an automatic signal voltage V(I/O) level adaptation feature. It can be operated in backplanes with 3.3 V V(I/O) or 5 V V(I/O).
The secondary PCI bus is preset for operation with V(I/O) = 5 V. (V(I/O) = 3.3 V is possible on request.)
Only the 5 V supply is required to operate the bridge. The LEDs V1 to V5 indicate the voltages present. As a minimum, the LEDs V3 = 5 V and V1 = V(I/O) must be lit.
The +/-12 V and 3.3 V voltages are only required if they are needed for the PCI assemblies in the expansion unit.
The maximum current a CPCI slot can supply is:
- +5 V - 8 A
- +3,3 V - 10 A
- +12 V - 1 A
- -12 V - 1 A
If the assemblies inserted in the PCI slots consume more than the currents listed above, then an additional current injection via the Faston quickconnect terminals X10 to X15 or via power adapter is required and must be wired accordingly.
Fuse F1
A POLY-SWITCH fuse (1.25 A) is integrated on the assembly between the primary (CPCI bus) and secondary (PCI bus) +12 V supply.
Frame Ground
The FRAME-GND (front panel) is connected to LOGIC-GND via a 1 MΩ resistor (R100) and a 10 nF capacitor (C100).
BIOS
The BIOS used must be compatible with PCI specification 2.1 so that devices after a PCI to PCI bridge can be recognized.

Power Adapter CPCI -> 4xPCI
The power consumption of some modern PCI boards is very high. The Compact PCI backplane may not always be able to supply the required currents.
It is for this very purpose that Hartmann Elektronik has developed a power adapter for the rear I/O connector. This adapter is simply inserted in the back side of the backplane and then supplies the PCI boards with additional current. The current from the power supply unit may be fed to this adapter either via an ATX connector, via Faston tabs or via screw terminals.
The standard form of delivery of the power adapter is without a front panel. If desired, the adapter can be shortened by the user himself to a length of 30 mm by removing the front panel fasteners.
